Sacred Heart College in Geelong Victoria has been a long standing client of Best Group over the past ten years. So when it came time to bring their new ‘learning center’ development to life through identity and environmental graphics, they looked no further than to bring our team on board. Approached with a brief of adding to the architectural design intent, the Best Group design and project management team created a concept of implementing a graphic treatment inspired by a voronoi web pattern. This embodied the core objective of the building; an innovative, multi-faceted learning space that encompasses the traditional notion of a library with modern technology and interactive group and independent learning spaces. Our design team started to overlay the voronoi pattern and typography style to the building (externally and internally) to perplex students, staff and the wider college community into involving themselves in the intent of the new space. That is, an innovative journey and path of learning.
With the concept endorsed by all project stakeholders after the first presentation, Best Group moved to design resolution stage and then delivery project management, bringing to life the concept through 3-dimensionality and the incorporation of LED lighting. The finished design includes environmental graphics to the external glazing, voronoi wrapping illuminated web to the central building lift core, a non-conventional donor board installation and a main donor wall. The project also included integration of statutory signage. Our delivery team ensured that manufacture and delivery was on-time and budget and integrated with the base build program and that the finished product was ready for the inaugural opening in October 2012. The result is one that is being hailed as the most innovative signage and environmental graphic installation that the college has undertaken, and one that the college leaders say elevates the building to be a true representation of learning spaces of the future. This notion is one that Sacred Heart will be implementing through their campus strategic plan for the next 10-15 years as education continues to rapidly transform in the 21st century.
